You don't need to get lost when your web site designer starts talking -- here's how to keep control and get a great site

By: Len McGrane

Any web site designer for small business will tell you design is one of the big parts of a web site. And this is right.

A stranger arriving at your site is not going to ignore ugly design. If the site looks ugly he'll go. As you know only too well.

You've got to have pleasing design, then. But where do you find it?

Fashion influences how we all see your site design.

The styles and themes, colors etc., of websites change over time. For example, I remember the time when corporate websites had gray backgrounds and burgundy was a common color. Visit any large business site now and you won't see that combination. And Web 2.0 is pushing changes also. The large fonts, gradients and clean lines of this latest web design are attractive and many sites use them.

You should probably look at your site every two or three years and consider if it has slipped inappropriately behind the fashion of the day. Your site must be right up there, so a customer gets the best possible impression of you from the design of the site.

As well, there is a technology aspect to design.

At the beginning of the web, web sites did not have a contact page. Instead a customer would click on the email text line and an email form from Windows would popup, and we used that to make contact. Today we all have contact pages running form-to-email software. Google's Earth is influencing our web sites. Increasingly web sites are building dynamic maps on their pages built around the Google Earth project which provides satellite images and street maps to anyone who wants them. Of course, maps help visitors and are becoming options to be designed into a web page.

Design around any new techology that will make your customer's visit better.

What is cool, and what technology is available, are what drive web site design. Use them both when you design a web site.
